I am a huge advocate of my “me time.” If I go too long without my me time I get cranky. You know the whole hangry thing? I have that too, but I also get that with my me time. I’m very much an introvert. I’m also highly sensitive. If you haven’t read about highly sensitive people, this article on 12 Things a Highly Sensitive Person Needs is pretty spot on.
The first and one of the most important factors mentioned in the article is time to decompress. Constant stimulation drains me. If I am at a conference, hanging out with friends, or in a noisy bar for a few hours, my energy is completely zapped by the end of it. I need a bit of time to focus eternally. Get away from the stimulation and back to my own mind. Realizing the importance of this and making time each week to incorporate some me time into my day has made a world of difference. I’m less stressed, I feel less exhausted, and I am so much happier. If you’re like me and you need some me time to focus on your mental health, here are some of my favorite activities.
Soak In The Bathtub
I’m a little obsessed with Lush bath bombs. Have you tried them yet? They have so many fun colors and add a little pizzazz to your bath. They leave my skin feeling so soft and they smell great too. You can enjoy your bath with a good book, a glass of wine, or just unwind with some music playing. Whatever way you choose, this is a great way to relax and take a few moments out of your day.
I know it sounds weird by this exercising is my favorite me time activity. Most people hate it. I LOVE IT! I do high intensity type workouts like beachbody programs or BBG. I like to switch it up or I start to get board if it gets to be too much routine. Exercising is such a soothing activity for my mind. It gives me a chance to blow off some steam, focus on my body, and be in my own world. This is one of the reasons I am not a huge fan of the gym. Workout videos or programs I can do at home create a quiet space for me to exercise and focus on me. I highly recommend it! Find a type of exercise you enjoy and use it as an excuse to get away from the world for an hour each day.
I am a bookworm. I love to read. Sometimes the best escape from stress going on in your own life is to dive into someone else’s story. If you like to read this is a great me time activity. Maybe you want to read some self help books, catch up on business ideas, or dive into an awesome sci-fi novel. Getting lost in another world allows you to detach from your own for a brief moment to put aside any worries or tension you may have going on. I find being able to step away from everything going on in my life can give me a clearer head when I have to dive back into it again.
Work On A Puzzle
This is also a favorite of mine. I am one of those people who has to challenge their brain. If things have been very routine for me, I need to find ways to work my brain differently. A puzzle is always a good solution for this. Working on a puzzle with a glass of wine or mostly a pint of beer in my case, does wonders for my mental health. I’m challenging my mind in different ways and I’m focusing on some much needed quiet time.
Cook A Meal
Cooking a meal can be fun and challenging. Trying out new recipes is a great me time activity. Allow yourself to be creative and maybe try a new recipe you’ve never had before. As a foodie, I love trying new food ideas and flavors.
Get A Massage
This one is pretty self explanatory and a great way to decompress. Zoning out to music, muscle tension release, and focusing on your breathing is such a perfect way to get back to you. Definitely one of my favorite me time treats!
Go On A Hike
I have a passion for hiking and nature. Being one with nature and going on a hike by myself is so rewarding. Of course I stick to well trafficked and trailed hikes when I am by myself. Providing the a physical challenge to reach the top and being rewarded with an awesome view is pretty awesome. It also gives you great space to work through thoughts and concentrate on you for a bit.
Get Out Those Crayons
I love that adult coloring came back with vengeance. I may or may not own a collection of coloring books that I take out from time to time. There’s something very therapeutic for me with coloring. A great way to spend an evening!
Write In A Journal
Thoughts, thoughts, and more thoughts. Sometimes life can get a little too cluttered for me. Daily tasks, a busy social calendar, and family demands. Take some times to write in a journal is a very useful tool for me. It forces me to really take in everything that is going on and put it on paper. A great way to provide some organization to the chaos in your mind, or just a great way to release all those thoughts. One of my favorite song lyrics in Breathe by Anna Nalick is “If I get it all down on paper, its no longer inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to.” I relate to this on so many levels.
Take Personality Tests
I kind of love these. It’s always fun to see how spot on these personality assessments are. If you haven’t taken the Myers Briggs personality quiz you should! I am a Defender or ISFJ and I find it to be pretty accurate. Which one are you?
I have to be honest. I’ve tried meditation twice. I’m awful. I have the hardest time shutting down my mind. Which probably means I need to work on this the most. I’ve read so many studies and have had countless friends express the benefits of meditation. It’s on my to-do list! Well, it’s on my me time list of things to try.
