The name was first introduced to the American public in mass from Mark Twain’s infamous literary character Tom Sawyer. In the 1876 novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Sawyer was portrayed as a mischief-making little boy. He had many adventures throughout the book with his friend Huckleberry Finn.
