His neighbors coined the term maverick as Samuel was considered independently minded because of his refusal to brand.  

In 1986 the popular film Top Gun was released starring Tom Cruise. He played the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.  

In 1994 the movie Maverick debuted. It is a western movie starring Mel Gibson who played the role of Bret Maverick.
