During the 4th century, Saint Margaret (known as Margaret of Antioch or Margaret the Virgin) was chastised by her father for her Christian beliefs. She rejected a marriage proposal from a powerful Roman governor because the proposal came with the demand to renounce her faith. Because of this she was tortured and beheaded. Later legends told of her escaping being swallowed by a dragon and she was commonly depicted in medieval art.
