History of the Name Lyla, Lila, or Lilah

Lyla first appeared in the English speaking world during the 19th century. There are theories as to where the name Lyla derived from, but no known source of inspiration to the sudden interest in the name.

One theory is that perhaps the source of interest came from Lord Byron’s 1813 poem The Giaour. The poem’s heroine was named Leila.

According to the Social Security Administration, Lyla appeared on the popular girl naming charts in 1906, 1908, and in 1910 to stay. The name never gained too much interest and ultimately fell off the charts in 1946.

In 2005, Lyla reappeared on the charts and skyrocketed up to a top 200 name by 2009. As of 2021, Lyla ranks as the 110th most popular girl’s name in the United States.

The alternative spelling version Lila appeared on the naming charts in 1900. It was quite popular during the early 20th century until interest started to wane in the 1940s. The name fell off the charts in 1970, reappeared from 1972 to 1974, again from 1980 to 1982, then showed up to stay in 1999. As of 2021, Lila ranks as the 223rd most popular girl’s name.
