Liam is a short form of the name William originally derived from the Irish name Uilliam and the old Germanic name William. 

When the Frankish Empire was divided, the name developed differently depending on the region. In Northern Francia, the name Willahelm first changed to Willelm and then to Willaume. In the Ile-de-France it changed to Guillaume. The English transferred the name into the modern form William

The Norman conquest of Ireland further evolved the name. At the time the Irish Ulliam was used alongside William. The short form for both of these names was Liam

The name Liam was not known outside of Ireland until the end of the 18th century. In the mid-1850s during a mass exodus out of Ireland to escape the great famine, Irish names became known everywhere. 

In England and Wales, Liam first shows up as an independent name from William in 1932. Although it was mainly given to families of Irish descent. By 1955, the name Liam was given to two boys out of every 10,000 until 1975 when it rose to four boys per 10,000.
