History of the Name Elijah

In the Old Testament, Elijah was a Hebrew prophet and miracle worker. According to the old testament, Elijah confronted King Ahab of Israel and his Phoenician-born queen Jezebel about their wicked deeds. At the end of his life, Elijah went to heaven in a chariot of fire. 

As a popular figure in medieval tales and being borne by a few early saints, the Latin form Elias came into general use during the Middle Ages. In Medieval England, Elis was the common spelling. 

The name died out by the 16th century and was revived by the Puritans after the Protestant Reformation in the current form Elijah.
