Aiden or Aidan is the anglicized form of Aodhán. Aodhán comes from the old Irish name Áedán, which is a diminutive of Áed (or Aodh).

Áed was the god of fire and of the underworld.

Aodh was a popular name in Ireland. It was borne by numerous people in Irish mythology and many high kings. 

Aodhán was the name of many Irish mythology characters. Most notably, it was the name of an Irish monk and Saint during the 7th century. Known as Aidan of Lindisfarne, he founded a monastic cathedral on the island of Lindisfarne. He served as its first bishop and spent his time spreading the gospel to the nobility as well as children and slaves.

He was also known as the Apostle of Northumbria. He is credited for restoring Christianity in Northumbria.
