The name Adriel is first found in 1 Samuel 18:19. Adriel was the son-in-law of King Saul. King Saul first promised his daughter Merab to David, but instead betrothed her to Adriel. It is not entirely clear why King Saul did this.  

Given the obscurity of the name Adriel in the bible and the confusion as to why he was mentioned, Adriel was not a common name.

In the 17th century, Adriel became a name used by the Puritans after the Reformation when English versions of the Bible started. The Puritans brought the Old Testament names into common use during this time. 

Adriel was not a common name until the 21st century when it was revived. According to the Social Security Administration, Adriel first appeared on the popular baby naming charts in 2002. It didn’t start gaining real traction until 2013 and has since catapulted towards the top.
