Formulate Shampoo and Conditioner Review + GIVEAWAY

How cool would it be if you could have a shampoo and conditioner custom designed for your specific hair needs? These were my initial thoughts when Formulate approached me for a collaboration. I’ve been using the products for a couple weeks now and want to share my experience.

The Basics

Formulate is a company that designs a shampoo and conditioner that is uniquely created by a chemist for your specific hair needs. All formulas are sulfate free, paraben free, cruelty-free, and made in the USA.

To start the process you go to their website and fill out a survey about your hair. This includes details of length, color, pattern, thickness, if it is oily/dry, etc. Once the basics are done, you then decide what your personal hair goals are. My hair has been going through some major changes since my pregnancy. Two huge changes have been lots of shedding and extreme oiliness. I’ve never dealt with either of these before so you can imagine how lost I am right now with how to get my hair back on track. The goals I chose for the survey included oil control, replenish hair, lengthen, mend split ends, and color protection.

The final step is choosing your own scent. How fun is that?! They have 7 scents to choose from and I chose Burgeon, a natural aromatic extract that captures the heady scent of a freshly bloomed orange blossom. Citrus smells are my personal favorite so I knew this would be a winner for me and I was right. I love the smell!

First Impressions

When the products arrived I was immediately impressed with their packaging. The shampoo and conditioner come in a simple and chic design of black and white bottles. Unfortunately, my first wash did not go very well. My hair ended up super greasy and there was sort of a film left behind. I contacted the representative I had been working with at Formulate and she informed me that with a sulfate-free product this happens to a ton of people and is completely normal. They suggest using the product for at least 6 washes to allow your hair time to adjust to the sulfate-free formula. Their goal is to get the perfect formula for your hair and it usually takes an average of 3 formulas to reach that. When the first formula did not work out after those 6 washes, they took the feedback I gave them and shipped out a newly created shampoo and conditioner to me. I was super impressed with the level of customer service while working through these kinks.

After washing with the new formula I no longer get an oily film on my hair. My hair feels softer and the oil seems to be a little better. I have not noticed a huge difference in shedding, but it is hard to know how much a product can really help with postpartum hormones. I am hoping over the next few months of continuing to use the formula I will notice a difference in these two areas.

Overall, I am happy with Formulate and their ability to custom design a formula for my specific needs. I am also very impressed with their level of customer service which is super important. I would offer one critique though. I wish they started with smaller tester bottles at first. If it takes an average of 3 formulas to find the perfect fit, that is a lot of formula that ends up being wasted and thrown away. By starting with tester bottles it would allow the customer to try the product out until they find the perfect fit and then receive full sized bottles at that point.
